Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil and Depression

February 19th, 2009. Published under Alternative Medicine. 1 Comment.

I was in my study in Long Island two weeks ago when the phone rang. Turns out an old buddy of mine hadn’t been feeling up to snuff so he took a trip to his family practitioner. And the medication the doctor gave him, made him feel worse.

He was looking for another opinion, and I’ve always had plenty of those. But I’m always reticent to countermand another doctor’s advice when I haven’t examined the patient or gotten the whole story. But this was a friend of mine so I bent my own personal rule.

I went through a whole series of questions, and he answered everything I asked without hesitation. I thought things over and gave him some advice, and sent him back to his doctor. After seeing his doctor again, telling his whole story, and asking the right questions, he got the same advice I gave him.

That’s a good thing.

Initially, his doctor had put him on anti-depressants, and while anti-depressants are exactly the right medicine for some, they are not the right call for others.

What I advised my friend was to get the whole story out. Many times, doctors only get the story the patient wants to tell, and what they leave out can be critically important. This lack of information affects the diagnosis, and what medications and protocols are prescribed.

After listening to my friend for about half an hour, I determined that he had a few things affecting his life that he needed to change.

1. He needed more sunlight, and this is not a joke. Getting some sun is critical for mood and emotion. My advice was to get outside for 20 minutes, once per day.

2. He needed to start exercising more. I advised 20 minutes a day of walking, and eventually an increase to 45 minutes.

3. He had to cut his alcohol consumption down to a quarter of what it was before.

4. He needed to adjust his diet. Up with the fruits and vegetables, down with the amount of red meat.

5. He needs to start taking an ultra pure pharmaceutical grade fish oil, which will support his health, as well as his mood and emotion. In numerous studies, it has been shown, time and again, that fish oil supports cognitive function and neurological healing.

His body needs balance.

But he’s not getting it by drinking too much, eating like a lion in the wild, not exercising, and staying inside.

What I outlined for him will make a tremendous difference in his health in a short time. And that’s the key to succeed, to get started as soon as possible. Like right now.
